In 1881, Spanish immigrant Juan Cuevas began cultivating tobacco in Pinar del Río, Cuba. He built a family enterprise rooted in the region’s rich soil, laying the foundation for a tobacco tradition that would span five generations.

Juan’s son grew the family tobacco business through the early 20th century, until the Cuban Revolution of 1959 forced the Cuevas family to flee. They left their land, but carried with them everything that mattered: knowledge, skill, and determination.

Re-establishing the family legacy in the Dominican Republic, Luis Sr. opened a factory in Santiago in 1983, later known as Tabacalera Las Lavas. He built a lasting reputation for crafting cigars for respected brands, carrying the family’s tobacco tradition into a new era.

For decades, Tabacalera Las Lavas proudly crafted cigars for other brands, helping bring their visions to life. Grateful for those partnerships and inspired by his family’s legacy, Luis Jr. set out to create cigars bearing the Cuevas name. Later, he and his son Alec created Patrimonio as a tribute to Luis Sr. a cigar that honors the generations whose work made it possible.
A STORY OF RESILIENCE
How La Mandarria Came to Life
In February 2019, our Miami warehouse was the scene of a devastating burglary: thieves smashed through walls with sledgehammers and stole over 25,000 of our cigars. It was a daunting setback – including the loss of half our limited edition stock. However, we learned just how strong and supportive the cigar community can be. Fellow manufacturers and customers immediately offered help and fundraising. Although humbled and grateful, we declined crowdfunding, determined to recover through our own perseverance. Instead, we poured our emotions into a new project: La Mandarria. This special release (meaning “the sledgehammer”) turned tragedy into triumph. By year’s end 2019, La Mandarria debuted as our strongest cigar to date – a symbolic “weapon” against adversity. The success of La Mandarria, now a regular production cigar, proved that we could overcome challenges and emerge stronger. This experience reinforced our family’s resilience and commitment to never give up, and the story has become a proud part of Casa Cuevas history.

What's Next
As we honor our past, we also look to the future. Casa Cuevas continues to innovate while staying true to our roots. We plan to introduce “1881” – a new series celebrating the year our family legacy began. This upcoming blend will embody five generations of knowledge and passion, offering aficionados a taste of our heritage with a modern twist. Our vision is to keep expanding internationally, create exciting blends (perhaps new wrappers or collaborations), and ensure that in another hundred years, the Cuevas tradition is still going strong. The story of Casa Cuevas is far from over – the best is yet to come.
